President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received Aleksei Miller of Gazprom on December 7, 2006. Karimov and Miller discussed bilateral cooperation issued and new joint projects.

Development of the relations between our countries may be appraised as successful, Karimov and Miller agreed. Uzbek gas export to Russia amounted to just over 1 billion cubic meters in 2003 and almost 8 billion cubic meters in 2005. It will most certainly exceed 10 billion cubic meters this year. Gazprom in the meantime intends to boost Uzbek gas production and export and to increase investments in this sector.

"We regard your visit both from the standpoint of technical issues concerning parameters of the Uzbek gas export to the northern Russia and export in 2007 in general, and as an opportunity to discuss our future cooperation," Karimov told Miller in front of journalists. "We all know that Uzbekistan is playing a major part in the future gas export and as exporter off gas from Turkmenistan and probably from other regions at some future date, regions south of the post-Soviet zone."

The accords between Uzbekistan and Gazprom entitle the latter to procurement of Uzbek gas until 2012, gas field development, and participation in development of the transportation infrastructure via the territory of Uzbekistan.
