The I International Festival of Folklore and Theater will take place in Turkmen cities between April 1 and 7. Eighteen troupes from fifteen countries are expected. The guest list includes Hunan Opera and Ballet Theater (China), Istanbul and Dijarbekir theaters (Turkey), Michurin and Chita theaters (Russia), Tbilisi State Theater of Drama named after Shota Rustaveli (Georgia), Namangan Theater of Music Drama and Comedy named after Alisher Navoi (Uzbekistan), Theater of Music Drama and Comedy (Kazakhstan). The International Organization for Turkish Culture and Arts will be represented as well.

Folk bands expected in Turkmenistan include Apache (United States), Anan (Kyrgyzstan), and bands from South Korea, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and France.

The opening ceremony will be staged on the premises of the Turkmen Theater of Drama while events of the festival itself will take place all over the capital. Some seminars will be arranged.

The late Turkmen president's attitude and policy towards the theater were certain quaint. President for life ordered the Theater Union disbanded, ballet and circus officially banned at the genres "colliding with national traditions and needs of the people". The Russian Theater named after Alexander Pushkin was demolished in Tashkent on Saparmurat Niyazov's personal orders in 2004.
