Turkmenistan is making preparations for gas export to China
Construction of a network of high-voltage lines is under way on the right-hand bank of the Amudarja, the area of the future pipeline from Turkmenistan to China. Project cost is estimated at over $27 million, Turkmenenergostoi is the contractor. The oil and gas accord President Saparmurat Niyazov and Chairman Hu Jintao signed in spring 2006 stipulates export of up to 30 billion cubic meters of gas to China as of 2009 and for the following 30 years.
Turkmenistan and China will pool efforts to survey and develop all fields on the right-hand bank of the Amudarja. The length of the gas pipeline from Turkmenistan to China via Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to Shanghai will be 4,000 kilometers. Turkmenistan is exporting gas to Russia and Iran now.
