Chief of Presidential Secret Service Akmurat Rejepov is sacked
Turkmen TV networks report Presidential Secret Service Chief Lieutenant General Akmurat Rejepov relieved of his duty "in connection with another assignment". Rejepov, 59, has been running Secret Service for the last seventeen years. One of Saparmurat Niyazov's closest associates and confidants, Rejepov was regarded as the most powerful security minister in Turkmenistan. The widespread opinion is that Gurbankuly Berdymuhammedov elected the new president on February 11 owes his current position to Rejepov.
What information is available indicates that Rejepov's resignation was preceded by an arrest of one Murad Agayev, 36, owner of the Oriental company and businessman associated with Rejepov.
Having Rejepov removed, the new president of Turkmenistan strengthened his own positions.
