The government of Kazakhstan is determined to repossess energy assets
"Wherever possible, the government of Kazakhstan stands for repossession of energy assets in strategic spheres in the name of energy security," Prime Minister Karim Masimov told Nur Otan faction of the parliament. "Certain steps in this direction are already taken."
According to Masimov, "difficult negotiations are under way with Project Kashagan participants over a better protection of the interests of the state." "We already have an agreement with a certain Russian company that 50% of the Bogatyr mine will be returned to the Kazakh state," Masimov said. "Construction of the Balkhash Heat Power Plant will facilitate energy security of the southern part of the country."
The premier promised continuation of efforts to "boost energy security of Kazakhstan" and said an emphasis was made on "development of coal-mining industry and nuclear energy."
