President of Russia congratulated his Uzbek opposite number
Press Service of the Kremlin reports that President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin phoned President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov with congratulations on victory in the presidential election on December 23.
Both leaders praised the level of Russian-Uzbek bilateral relations and reiterated determination to settle all issues in the spirit of partnership. Putin and Karimov congratulated each other on the forthcoming New Year and discussed the schedule of bilateral contacts in 2008.
The Uzbek Central Electoral Commission published interim results of the election as won by Karimov who had polled 88.1% votes. The turnout at the election was estimated at over 90%. Independent observers and human rights activists claim that the figures themselves show that the powers-that-be controlled the election even having after prevented participation of the opposition in the presidential race.
Karimov was elected the president for seven years.
