Uzbekistan: Official statement on Andijani events released
The Uzbek Prosecutor General's Office finally released a statement on the events in Khanabad. UzA news agency quoted it as saying that "A gang of 2 or 3 criminals used an explosive device in an attack on the police checkpoint at the entry into Khanabad, Andijani region, on the night on May 26.
A police officer and one of the attackers were wounded in the skirmish that followed.
Their mission aborted in the face of spirited resistance, the criminals slipped away into the night.
An explosion took place on Fitrat Street, Andijan, at about 2 p.m. on May 26. The unidentified suicide bomber and a police officer were killed, several pedestrians wounded.
Preliminary investigation shows that the criminals must have come from Kyrgyzstan.

It became the authorities' first official acknowledgement of the developments in the Andijani region news agencies have been reporting since Tuesday morning.
