Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan to build new railway by 2015
Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymuhammedow, Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon signed a memorandum on understanding on the construction a new railway, which is to link the three countries, during a meeting in Ashgabad on 19 Mar. 2013, Ozodi Radio reports.
The new line will be 400-km long and will link Afghanistan’s Akina-Andkhoy section with Turkmenistan Atamurad-Imamnazar and Tajikistan’s Pyanzh railway sections. Turkmenistan plans to launch the construction in July 2013. The Turkmen side will also construct the Afghan section; the construction completion is scheduled for 2015.
A 75-km railway started serving wagons from Afghanistan into Uzbekistan since late 2011.
